CNN: Martha Stewart says she ‘really screwed up’ with homeless Halloween costume

"...America’s first self-made female billionaire — appeared dressed as a homeless person, wearing a black hat, distressed jeans and a cardigan, with black marks smeared across her face, as she held up a sign that read “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!” In the post’s caption, Stewart promoted her candle collection. ...."

I am very, very curious what her thought patterns were on choosing that costume, actually.

Is this general attitudes/thoughts about homeless?
"Oh I know, I'll pretend to be homeless, like those sad creatures I see on the road as I drive by"

No thought at all about the message being sent? (you'd think someone all about appearances would have that awareness)
"Oh, I'm so rich, wouldn't it be amusing if I pretended to be poor and homeless?"

Strange disconnect over traditions? "When I was a kid, lots of kids would dress like a bum! I'll do that again!"

@ai6yr Man, I could even understand a 5-o'clock shadow and a bindle being a very out of touch, romantic representation of a hobo. But this?

@benetherington @ai6yr
Ugh, she even went with face smudges. Because she thinks homeless people are dirty, apparently 😬

@ai6yr

she has repeatedly shown that she has zero empathy for or understanding of human beings. i'll bet she thought she was being funny and ironic.

@ryanc @paul_ipv6 Yes, hence my question. Is the isolation of being a fabulously wealthy billionaire which spawns this kind of thing?

@ai6yr
"What do you mean, marginalized people aren't my cosplay?!?" 🙄

If someone actually wants to raise awareness, they don't do it by imitating the people having the problem.

@me_valentijn Yeah, that's pure "damage control statement"

Better damage control would be "sorry for being insensitive, I have donated $25,000 to my local women's homeless shelter"
