I keep coming back around to the concept “if you do something largely and badly enough you drastically decrease the likelihood of anyone else trying to do anything similar” and wondering which horribly poor executions of ideas along the way we’ve punished the ideas themselves for while still hoping this LLM chicanery results in nobody trying “thinking machine” again for a few hundred years.
@djsundog Zeppelins. Every single alternate history story ever written (barely exaggerating at all) has a working helium-based Zeppelin industry. It's so easy to move gigatons of cargo across the world, for nothin'!
We don't in this fail-state timeline because people are scared of "OH THE HUMANITY!", don't understand the difference between hydrogen & helium, there isn't enough helium anyway, & weather makes it challenging.
as an aside, it comes up often enough that if you happen to know of a short name for “if you do something largely and badly enough you drastically decrease the likelihood of anyone else trying to do anything similar” then please do let me know because it deserves to be a Law or at least a Postulate or something with a name that I can substitute in once in a while, because that’s a mouthful for a concept that’s pretty straightforward once you’ve parsed through the idea. thank in advance, intrepid fedizens.
@djsundog
Reminds me of the Hindenburg airship crash. Aerospace techs still debate whether airships could have been economically viable, but that crash ended interest
Zuckerberg absolutely did this to the metaverse concept, but I cannot decide if it was intentional or just another fucking fumble.
@djsundog For things "large scale" and "for profit", it absolutely did. But we must remember that there's an entire universe of human experience outside that where people are still trying
Even anything cyber is still niche in comparison to the vast expanse of human experience. People still make things in cornered spaces, despite others having done so, cause...
Heck let's take batteries. The industry is fully taken over by behemoths, but folks out there still making their own. I'm making my own
