Chemistry lab required "closed-toe shoes". Stupid student wore dainty little shoes that covered her toes but not the tops of her feet, then argued with me over rules. Shrugged and let her have her way. Felt absolute glee two weeks later when she spilled strong alkali on her feet.
@fesshole Why would you let someone injure themselves like that to “make a point”?
@fesshole This reminds me of the greatest gag our high school Chem teacher ever pulled, and how it made everyone think I was a terrible person for a full minute
There are more emotive moai than this man, and I was the only person in the room who laughed, cackled even, when he started screaming after spilling acetic acid on himself.
One of the girls up front panicked and asked if he was okay, and this man stopped screaming like nothing had happened and said, "Of course, it's just vinegar."
@fesshole Satisfying perhaps, but ultimately, as the responsible one in this situation, you should have enforced the spirit of the rules rather than the letter. Sorry.
If the student wanted to play games, they can play them from outside the classroom.
@fesshole When barrack-room lawyering can get a person killed...
@fesshole Words matter, though. The chemistry lab should have been clearer on the kind of shoes required, instead of using a shoddy popular expression.
@fesshole You sound like a wonderful instructor.
@fesshole if you're a TA in this situation, odds are very good that you're going to lose your TA position, as you've shown you can't be trusted, which may cost you the ability to finish your PhD.
If you're an instructor, it's rare to have tenure, and very likely your contract won't get renewed.
But sure, I'm sure this happened and isn't just some weird, vaguely misogynist revenge fantasy.
