Is that true that France wants to introduce a tax per gigabyte used in internet connections?
@selea It's true, though it's not definitive yet (and many are not pleased with it, of course):
https://www.clubic.com/actualite-636934-une-taxe-sur-chaque-gigaoctet-telecharge-les-deputes-viennent-de-voter-une-mesure-qui-pourrait-couter-cher.html
Itβs true but it will never happen. A minor party took the opportunity to pass the bill in the lower chamber when most deputy where missing. Both chambers and the government are expected to block the bill as soon as it reaches the next stage. Itβs mostly a PR stunt from a small party
@selea
Yes and no. A party in france wants that and started now the law creating process for that with a majority of one vote. It's the second time they started it because the first time it failed.
So I think I'm gonna take this seriously, when they managed to get a law out of it that doesn't get immediately chopped by their courts.
CDNs for example should be measured not for the network but per customer, but they can't do deep packet inspection, that would hurt european privacy laws. So they want to classify unreadable tls-traffic coming out of french national CDN endpoints targeted to french end user devices. I mean you probably agree with me, that IT is not their lawmakers strong suit in that particularly movement...
as I understand it, it's in early legislation:

@selea I think (not sure) that France is proposing to tax the telecom and internet companies sending internet traffic, not directly the people using the internet. I might be wrong.
@selea it's true but I can't give much dΓ©tails as I don't know much about this.
@selea next question would be what constitutes an internet connection
