I felt inspired to write down some of my admittedly indecisive thoughts on #ai and, in particular, its relationship to the development of #musicproduction #software.

@amadeus @alisynthesis tbf even before the vibecoding boom we had random devs make 300 compressors a year. I mostly just use AI to make stuff that doesn't exist yet, or for accessibility reasons. I don't really like using computers to make my music, so I made cfw for the Roland SP-404mkii which makes it talk and have enjoyed making music a lot more as a result. Though I wouldn't offload the actual process to AI, the process is the thing I like doing, the finished result is a nice extra I can be proud of. Also AI just can't make actually interesting or unique music either so there's that
@amadeus I have wondered how you felt about all this. Thanks for sharing!
@amadeus Very good points! I'm also indecisive about generative AI. If you use it as assistant to learn and grow, it can be pretty powerful. If you're using it to generate music, I don't see the point other than profit-maxing, because all the joy I have when making music comes from putting all my creativity and intuition directly into it. Why should I leave this part to a machine?
At the same time I see the bad impact on our environment and society. I'm dreaming of a world with open source AI models, owned by us not big tech, trained on fairly sourced data, running on decentralized hardware powered by solar energy.
