@futurebird I like the trivia that that term was coined by a Twitter campaign to take Stephen Colbert off TV because a Twitter account not run by Stephen Colbert posted something that by today's standards would be very tame for Twitter
@ben @futurebird fwiw “canceled” was coined in the 14th century AD and took on pretty much the same meaning it has now by the 15th century. The cheeky modern discourse usage was coined by Black trans and queer culture a couple decades ago, long before pop culture picked it up and it became a twitter meme. By the Colbert thing happened it was novel to the mainstream but not at all new.
@Moss @futurebird I don't think they were talking about "cancel culture" back when they were speaking Middle English
@ben @futurebird I wasn’t kidding. The term was used back then to draw lines through the names of people who were to be shunned.
@futurebird Bill Maher again?
@roknrol @futurebird three words that should never be said
@dbat Well yeah, they've been said so many times at this point they should be engraved somewhere. Perhaps a headstone. @futurebird
@futurebird he’s on two television shows, four podcasts and wrote an op-ed in the washington post talking about how cancelled he is
