2026 in a nutshell: I don't mind having to manually re-set the time on my stove and microwave, because that's a small price to pay for them NOT being connected to the internet.

@WizardOfDocs Good grief, that does sound like a load of suck! Truly the worst of both worlds.
I wonder how cheap and small we could make a “dumb” chip that does nothing but grab the local time from either a mobile phone tower or digital TV broadcast on power-up, and then once an hour to cover things like daylight saving. No choice of method would be future-proof, but so long as manual adjustment was still possible that need not matter,
@gregeganSF @kagan Commonly in UK kitchen clocks update themselves to correct time from a radio signal. Mine is one. Cheap clock, longstanding reliable design.
Oh, cool! I wish we had that in Australia.
@kagan conversely, I'm really annoyed that I *have* to reset the time on my phone *and* remake a whole bunch of calendar events, because BC announced it was going to permanent Daylight Time *at least three months ago* and *nobody* added it to their lists
if I have to rely on tech companies that take governments at their word, I need them to do it all the time, not just when it hurts people
