I #Selfhost my email server (that handles my 20+ domains) since almost 20 years now, currently on a cheap virtual machine running Linux, with 1 CPU core, 2G of RAM, 40G hard drive and unlimited network traffic which costs me less than €5/month.
Many people keep on telling me that running your own email server is more or less impossible. I simply don't listen to them.
I explained my setup in a blog series starting at https://jan.wildeboer.net/2022/08/Email-0-The-Journey-2022/

@jwildeboer I’ve also been self-hosting my mail for around 5-6 years now. Took me a long time to get there, mostly because everyone wanted to tell me that I shouldn’t. Now it’s one of my absolute favorite things to selfhost. My setup serves my specific needs better than any commercial provider can and while many services around me turn to the worse, I can be pretty chill about it.
I am still using Mailcow for the time being, which does require more resources, but I am working on experimenting more with the individual parts and want to eventually move to a setup that I configured fully myself and is no longer bound to a VM with Docker.
