I picked up a book about a dude doing film tours in the DIY punk scene in the mid to late 2010s.
On the fourth page he namedrops a dude I know pretty well, who then plays a central role in the book.
I don't think I know this guy, but we clearly have friends in common, he's talking about playing venues I've played.
A quote from this book:
One of the adults there spoke to me after my screening in a serious tone and would be the first of many adults to ask me, "Why don't you have representation? You're very good at this." I never had a good answer to that, I just wanted to make shit.
Literally just the other day my co-worker asked me if I ever considered being a "real filmmaker." They don't realize I motherfucking AM.
The book, so far, is mostly just a reflection on touring and the way the DIY scene ebbs and flows. It's almost a journal, very personal and raw, the kind of thing you'd expect from a book published by a filmmaker for the diy punk community.
There's a lot of "we did really well on this tour, and only lost about Thirty dollars" and "and then I had to take six months off, because I got a real job." and "but Bob was on heroine, so I'm not sure how much you can trust what he had to say."
And that sounds an awful lot like the diy scene I remember and part of why I left it behind.
I'm thinking a lot about what a diy scene looks like without hard drugs or food insecurity.
@ajroach42 man, I REALLY wanna read this book!
@LeoKirke I can probably help with that, if you don't wanna order it directly. He sells them through his website, but I haven't checked the price.
The timeline lines up that we might have been at shows together. I recognize the name of his production house, and I remember being at (and booking!) shows with film screenings. We were a small part of the local diy punk scene for a few years, after all.
I haven't gotten to the part of the timeline that I would be in yet, and I'd be genuinely shocked at even a passing reference to what we were doing, but it's still an exceptionally small world.
I wonder if any of my other friends, or any other art groups I was involved with, wil make an appearance.
