@mawhrin @hipsterelectron @agturcz @davidgerard how has the new UI on here been treating you? I don't really have any serious complaints so far, but the unnecessary luminosity change was jarring.
@mawhrin @hipsterelectron @agturcz @davidgerard one of the things that has made me so happy returning to OpenBSD after not daily driving it for well over a decade is that classic desktop UIs were so much better in literally every single way, in part also because the controls for moving and stacking windows were so much more comprehensive. But like why did we ever stop supporting proper custom themes on things? Like beyond dark mode and light mode.
I almost felt like I was being warmly embraced by the visually crisp and simple feel of motif. Just let me choose the assets used to display the UI and then everybody wins. Or at least have a dozen themes to choose from. The inability to adjust things like contrast, color scheme (this one is pretty dang important to me due to partial colorblindness), font sizes, font serifs, etc is a pox of modern UI design and it is a genuine accessibility crisis.
The reason I got so mad about e.g. gnome 3 in the very beginning for example was the complete loss of that extra layer of customizability out of the box (and the extent to which it was put back after lots of complaining was woefully inadequate) along with serious compatibility breaking changes and barely any effort to label things properly for accessibility tools. Every blind person I am personally friends with is running like 10-15yo software on Windows or X11 where the screenreader stuff still works without just saying like "button! button! button! button! button!" while you navigate by trial and error and counting, because another demographic that was totally left behind by this shit was them. They'd spent decades getting screen readers to work everywhere and then all of it is just broken overnight, presumably to please a few aesthetes.
When the design school went from the modern pragmatist approach of trying to be as humanly ergonomic and adjustable as possible to the weird post-human "we force our liquid ass down your throat" where the fewer discernible features and edges there are the better, it genuinely became so painful to use computers.
@somebody @mawhrin @hipsterelectron @agturcz huh i still have the old one, which i vastly prefer
also shows the old one not logged in
@davidgerard @mawhrin @hipsterelectron @agturcz the changeover happened for me after I refreshed the page after there was a discussion about how we needed to accept a security update. I'm curious as to why it came with an obligatory UI change though
@somebody @mawhrin @hipsterelectron @agturcz the masto 5 UI which is visible if you go to anything on mastodon.social
it's uh purple squircles
@davidgerard @mawhrin @hipsterelectron @agturcz ngl adversarially making me post less which at least at a completely individual level for me is a potential benefit, lol
@somebody @hipsterelectron @agturcz @davidgerard that's not the redesigned UI as they run on dot social – which i think is a good choice.
i very much dislike the luminosity changes though. pretty jarring indeed, the softer colors of the 4.x were nicer.
