@K6KH I've aborted a couple of estate sales from that, even with my normal tradition of N95 masking and sometimes gloves.
Early on, before the pandemic, ended up briefly at an estate sale which smelled of death, and looking through their shelf found an urn with someone's relatives in it... It was a bad scene. I quickly left and regretted that one 🤢
@ai6yr
Where else would you run plumbing? I ran CPVC through parts of my attic when I was plumbing the clothes washer. I at least insulated the pipes.
Several months ago, I had a real plumber fix my water heater. He kindly offered to replace all my cpvc runs with something more professional. I told him maybe later.
@ai6yr My wife works Saturdays for an estate sale company. Paying a sale company is not how it should work. The estate sale company gives YOU a percentage of the total sales. A good company will come in, clean, merchanside/display, price, run the sale, clean everything out that doesn't sell afterwards. It's all hands-off for the owner.
In the Ann Arbor, MI area, Such-A-Find Estate Liquidation is the go-to for over 20 years.
@Nead This particularly company is TERRIBLE. They overprice everything by 10x sometimes. (selling LPs for $10-20, as an example...) Won't even negotiate on the last day of the sale. I suspect they are just shoveling all the stuff out the door into large bins for the landfill. And the place is always a shambles. Plus the guy who runs it strikes me as kinda an a*****. (never friendly, kinda aggressive).
@ai6yr That gives Estate sales a bad name. Some people confuse them with auctions too. The corner stone is "price to sell." You have to treat the homeowner/client respectfully because they are (usually) going through a stressful time: death in the family, downsizing and moving, retiring, etc. A smart estate sale owner will know the value of categories of items: art, antiques, toys, clothing, etc., they are experts at this.
@Nead Yeah, there's a few firms that do it right... Priced at "fair price but will move" and the last day is "move it all so it doesn't go in a dumpster". These folks are "skim cream off the top and throw most of it away".
@ai6yr When I was looking at houses for sale ages ago, I once saw a setup kind of like this for radiant heat in their floor, but the one I saw was much neater.
That photo captures someone’s idea of “straightened up.”
😱
@ai6yr Today I learned what PEX is, and how not to use it.
@ai6yr that's worse than ours was when we moved in (we've had it fixed and put into the wall)
@ai6yr that's a tankless water heater on the left connected to the red pex lines.
@ai6yr could be the lines are "temporary". The whole setup looks like a perpetual remodel.
@intrepidhero Well, given it's an estate sale, I think it's a "next owners gets to remodel after buying this house" situation.
@ai6yr no doubt they'll have their work cut out for them.
@intrepidhero Note: do not hire this person to re-do your plumbing, whoever did that job.
First glance, with ham radio on my mind, I thought it was an Anderson PowerPole power distribution block.
Then "Is that colorful coax?"
@murodegrizeco 😂 I thought it might have been solar cabling, but, no.
@ai6yr Yup, that’s PEX lines running from a manifold. It’s common in houses with poured slab foundations. Once a pipe breaks or otherwise gets damaged in the slab, it’s frequently cheaper to just run new line in the attic vs jackhammering up the floor. Downside is that if you live somewhere cold, your pipes will constantly be freezing without the earth insulation.
@ai6yr All that said, that’s one of the worst installations I’ve ever seen of what is already a bodge job to begin with.
@ai6yr I went to this sale this morning. The house was filthy.
