The World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme set up the #IPCC in 1988.
(Was it because climate scientists were getting too loud about climate change and the US wanted some control over the message?) 🧩 🧵
1.5°C "is really a diplomatic goal that has been mainly championed by island states, for whom 2°C was almost a death sentence."
#Futurology: "The climate issue is discussed in the future." #SSP: "They tried to map out a space of calculable and conceivable possibilities with the tools at their disposal. […] There are many things that are missing."
#IAM: "The assumption is that the world will continue more or less as it is, which is still a pretty strong assumption, and that on top of that, we will implement climate policies."

195 member states _govern_ the IPCC. The member states _elect_ a bureau of scientists to serve through an "Assessment" cycle (currently #AR7). So #IPCC assessments depend on governments.
On the contrary, climate scientists build consensus science without the IPCC or governments: https://zenodo.org/records/23463829
