I already pointed this out but I feel like I will have to just continue to keep pointing out: the person who coined the term "the streisand effect" is on the board of directors of the company that is blocking these links...
@tshirtman what do you think it is effective at?
@liaizon well, preventing the spread of information, and even for people who heard about it, from actually accessing it, even if *sometimes* people realizing it was blocked and making *that* a story can be counter productive, i think our attention is captured by so much these days, that it's less likely that this effect matters in things less media-juicy than a celebrity mansion.
@tshirtman well they are not preventing anything from spreading right now. they aren't blocking people posting the link, only that the link gets a scare screen. so I would argue this tactic would almost always do the opposite of the stated goal. we are talking about this right now *because* they blocked it.
@liaizon so that would suggest that even if the effect is real, blocking stuff is still generally effective, even if sometimes counterproductive?
