@lumi I prefer the term "diversity" of the ecosystem, which emphasizes user choice.
"Fragmentation" is the other side of the coin, when portability becomes difficult because people are scattered among N incompatible projects. That is what has happened for at least a good decade with various OSes implementing their own incompatible extensions to POSIX.
Diversity without fragmentation is achievable, but it needs a focus on collaboration. Let's hope the next generation of Unix-like OSes is smarter about this than the previous/current one was.
Those who do not understand Unix are condemned to reinvent it, poorly. -- Henry Spencer
I don't think "Unix-like" vs "not-Unix-like" is a meaningful distinction, as long as there's a POSIX layer which is the only reasonable (if wildly imperfect) standard we have. I don't care how it is implemented underneath as long as software can be ported to it without ifdef forests and duplication of portability-by-exhaustivity efforts.
My ideal OS would have a transactional filesystem API and better libc primitives (yes, I still believe today that C is the correct language to implement an OS), and a modern, portable framework to address system events, away from netlink/kqueue/all that shit. And apart from that, I have no qualms with Unix. It works, and I'd rather do incremental improvements on it than a revolution.
esp now that linus is going full slop. and even before that, linux has been a full corpo project for a long while now. it is not a community project anymore
all software should be a community project
we need more kernels! more fragmentation! people should be able to pick and choose what fits them
this linux-only monoculture is bad
