So long GitLab. You’ve been replaced by a Git forge written in Elixir and C.
It is 100% goblin mode.
Why?
Because modern git forges are bloated, slow, and overly complicated. I’m a rebreather diver who happens to write code, so I built a replacement with the same level of care I put into life-support controller firmware. No open source, no community management tax. Just pure, deterministic development exactly how I want it. Shares more in common with Dalton’s law than traditional software development.
The Metrics:
• Lib: 35,079 LOC
• Tests: 19,673 LOC
• C_src: 6,593 LOC
• Migrations: 1,804 LOC
• JS: 639 LOC
• Total: 63,800 lines of code
Result? Sub-300ms page loads. The resultant Single Page App feels instant, faster than the human eye can respond.
The Stack (All named after marine life & oceanography):
• ex_view: Replaces ~80% of LiveView. Mounts the entire webapp once; never remounts the socket. Forces deterministic immutability into the browser.
• sphyrna: Custom memory manager in C/Elixir replacing allocations for absolute NIF safety. (Hammerhead sharks I love diving with Born out of my rebreather life-support controller design).
• undertow: Blazing fast scheduler based on FreeRTOS designs. Replaces Oban.
• diadema: Caching and automatic invalidation for free with Ecto (named after the long-spine urchin).
• ekman: Zero-trust GCM encrypted websockets. (Ekman transport that does suction and pumping driving ocean nutrient transport)
• thalassia: Native Docker container registry. (By the power of seagrass behold docker.)
• tridacna: Object storage with blob and digest. (The giant clam, holding your objects.)
• halimeda: Artifact storage. (Stored in coralline algae that makes beach sand)
• isistius: A full FreeBSD package repository server for deployment (cookie cutter shark).
• leiopathes: A full hex package repository server for deployment (hexacoral for your packages).
86 NIFs. Complete package building. Full PWA.
Video attached of it running at blistering speed.
If you’ve ever felt software is inadequate, the age of LLMs allows us to put our will into compute at our own level. By constraining LLMs to your vision you can too create things like this. In doing so you have zero obligation to share or even mention it if you desire. This indeed makes it fun for me to replace entire stacks and make them operate the way I want. You should never feel guilty for not contributing to open source or remaining private with your work. That is work you did, therefore you get to dictate what is done with it. You owe nothing to anyone. So do what you do, go forth and make amazing things in private or public. But simply do it as you want and what you want. The results will be far higher bar than what would be trying to get past the barriers. To do a pull request and go through review and work tirelessly for a simple feature? What better way to spend your time than just make it work how you want.
Make amusing licences that mock free software as I did if you wish. That it’s equal to unregulated runoff. Whatever you want and do, be amused, have fun and enjoy what you do. After all if you’re doing it? Who better to do it for than yourself. For your own reasons that require zero justification.

@SlicerDicer good work you goblin but also
@feld Fuck the what? That’s what I did.
@SlicerDicer that video is so fast it looks like you're just flashing screenshots
@feld That’s real time speed, in fact when I first started using it? It was hard, jarring and difficult. It moved so fast my brain didn’t know what to do next. I had to think with the lag I expected.
@SlicerDicer like you need time to refocus your eyes lol
you know this is the kind of shit that Apple does and then they pay millions for engineers to figure out how to fake the transitions to make the computer appear to be slower so normies don't have a seizure
it's the turbo tards like you and me that want it to be as fast as fast can be
reminds me of the old days on a green CRT when shit just popped on the screen instantly

@SlicerDicer how much productivity is lost because of intentionally slow UIs?
@feld Well I can say that the lost productivity by clicking through normal git forges can result in quite substantial time consumed. The latency being 4-10x means that just navigating can cause 30 seconds to a min if you know where you are going and it’s not too deep. Just basic navigation, you don’t really notice the time either as you are just accepting such things.
@SlicerDicer reminds me of my impression of Zabbix back in the day. I told my coworkers we can't use this shit as our monitoring stack or my mouse is going to run out of clicks
