it is distinctly starting to feel the same as "Oh I Keep Picking The Wrong People to Be My Friends"..."Stop thinking always of how to be slower, and focus more on how to be faster...stop lovingly handcrafting all our code and use AI more." https://www.404media.co/protons-ceo-cancels-ai-re-interviews/
@db @loriemerson @kupfers @mario_angst_sci I’ve been running off my own email via a hosted domain since maybe 2000 or 2001 and really haven’t had too many problems. Eventually I am going to save up for one of the @JulianOliver courses and get it onsite.
There are occasional bumps in owning email but nothing terrible, gmail etc goes down too. I also host a few things for friends, one of whom is a reasonable risk as a target for disruption and this hasn’t been a problem either.
I estimate I average 15minutes each month thinking about the technical aspects of my email hosting.
@gahlord @db @loriemerson @kupfers @mario_angst_sci Agreed. I deploy high rep MTA's often, and have run my own for over 20yrs, Postfix+Postscreen/Dovecot/OpenDKIM/Procmail/ClamAV stacks mostly. But to be honest it is non-trivial without sufficient knowledge and diligence, esp today. Many boxes to tick, DMARC, SPF, DKIM, rDNS/PTR ++.
Once secured, & running, it is however very low maintenance, with A+ in tests and delivery. A beautiful thing to be free of the big mailboxes or managed hosting.
@gahlord @db @loriemerson @kupfers @mario_angst_sci A decent 'quick fix' to all this, for those that want to self-host mail but don't want to dive into the weeds, is MailCow. Docker, quick up and go. Never as fast nor flexible as a native MTA, esp if you want to hook up webmail clients, do relaying for trusted hosts, multiple mailing domains etc, but will get you there for the basics.
@loriemerson fastmail hasn’t broken my heart …yet
