email is a long solved problem so catching up with gmail doesn’t really make sense. The way they do a lot of their “features” is just insane surveillance tech.
@jalefkowit @timmy This is a fantastic review. I've read that book, and wasn't impressed for the same reasons you mentioned. Despite that, I started reading The Every earlier this year.
At first the story is a conventional one where the MC gets inside the "Every" with the intent to sabotage it with increasingly grotesque ideas, assuming that people will finally recoil. Legit suspense cuz there's strategy, objectives & the possibility it might work.
Then the machinery starts eating the story.
@jalefkowit @timmy I mostly just also want a free, bare bones, EASY TO USE alternative to Gmail for an intermediate tech user like myself. And I WAS planning to switch over to proton mail but hahaha not now.
@ItsJenNotGoblin @timmy I've been pretty happy with Fastmail, which while not free is at least not terribly expensive. (Figure $3-6 per month per email account, depending on how much storage and add-on features you want.)
Free would be nice, but it also opens up a different can of worms (the old "if you're not the customer, you're the product" problem).
@jalefkowit @timmy yeah, I don't mind paying a small amount like that, but I just don't want to pay an extraordinary amount that will continue to rise exponentially a la Netflix
@timmy I wrote a whole thing about this a long time ago, for all the good it did
"What makes Google successful is that it makes compelling products. And what makes that scary is that what makes those products compelling is inseparable from their ideology. There is no way for the one to exist unless you accept the other."
