Anyone want help with Mastodon or the wider Fediverse? 🙂
Reply or DM me, whichever you prefer, and I'll try to find you answers. Especially want to help new and/or non-techy people!
(And yes I am a human being, this isn't any kind of bot, I don't use any kind of AI.)
@FediTips Hi there, I'd like to set my account so that my old toots are deleted.
I changed this in my settings a week ago, but nothing has happened yet.
Can you tell me how long it usually takes for a change like this? Or do I need to do anything else? Thanks.
If your server is very busy, it may place the automated deletions in a queue and deal with them later. It can sometimes take a while for them to actually happen.
If it's been a really long time and they're still not deleted, check your settings (more info at https://fedi.tips/deleting-posts-automatically-in-mastodon-after-a-certain-time-period) and if the settings are correct ask your server admin about it.
@FediTips Thank you so much for your fast answer. I‘ll wait for some more days :)
I was about to post the following when your offer post popped up 🙂
I often wish I had a fedi 'wall' where I could post a re-arrangeable list of my principal thoughts/ideas/principles.
Like a set of pinned mastodon posts that — on a large screen — would display like posters on a bedroom wall.
The posts could be original, or links from other fediverse locations like mastodon or pixelfed.
Is there something in the fediverse that does that, or could be induced to?
This might be what you're after? https://fediwall.social
You can configure it to show what you want by clicking on the hashtags and account address at the top.
(It can also be self-hosted, techy details are at https://github.com/defnull/fediwall )
It already exists! 😀
Thank you, @FediTips
@FediTips I tend to have some trouble with content from other instances not showing properly, taking too long, things like that. For example, if I open someone's profile on the original instance, it's different from what appears to me from here. Is this something natural from the fediverse, or am I doing something wrong?
If you are viewing a post or discussion thread, wait 5 - 10 seconds and you should see a message appear that says "Show more posts". Click on this and you will see all of that thread's posts appear. This feature means everyone on every server sees the same discussion 🙂
Profiles don't yet have this feature, but an equivalent feature for profiles has been written and is waiting for review by the developers (technical details are at https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/34597).
The private messages!
The way mastodon handles private replies instead of separate inbox was something I did not know about until recently (and still bit unsure about) so I'm sure new users would find helpful a guide and tips on how to do that!
We'll, what kind if help ware you looking for?
I'm offering people help?
It's great to see there's still helpful people in the world.
Thank you for you speedy response.
