I have a potentially strange question... Does anyone have a recommendation if I would want to buy a printed encyclopedia that dates from before the advent of LLMs that is both aesthetically pleasing on the shelf but also still recent enough that it doesn't contain too much outdated knowledge?
@Gargron As a LIbrarian I would recommend eithe World Book oe Encyclopedia Britannica. Both still offer print editions.
@Gargron I think you're asking about The Machinist Handbook
@Gargron Encyclopedias were considered “outdated” by their third or fourth year. Check your local library. If they have what you are looking for, they can also direct you to the vendor.
@Gargron it depends on what your personality is and what you are looking for. They cover a vast array of topics in concise short sections. As a teenager I would spend hours reading from one subject to another. Even if the entry is out of date, it is interesting to see how it was thought of before. If you’re it a generalist and interested in everything, they are perfect if not they will be just books on a shelf. Good luck.
@Gargron You can download wikipedia for free
@Gargron World Book Encyclopedia 2022 has a big ole dinosaur on it!!! That's pretty aesthetically pleasing afaic 🦖
It's out of print now, but you can find library copies on eBay!

@Gargron Why the pre-LLM condition? I would assume that no authoritative encyclopedia sold today would use them, if anything because LLM creations are not copyrightable.
@Gargron I'd bet the Reference Dept at your library could answer for you. They won't have one to sell but they're very good at answers
@Gargron I've been thinking the same thing, lately.
@Gargron I think the biggest issue isn’t outdated info, but up-to-date info.
@jarm Do I look like an LLM company?
Do not look at 2026 World Book - it's gross
@Gargron do you speak Portuguese ?
