Jesus fucking christ, Proton (yes, this is a subtoot of the 404 article).
I just moved there a few years ago to get away from fucking Google. It was a huge project. I do not have the bandwidth to just up and do it again like nothing.
Infuriating.

@Meznor @darkbeth same boat too. The ethic bankruptcy of Proton is here, and I picked this service when I escaped from gmail because they had a better ethic. I'm really concerned by potential security breaches and letting my email in such an infrastructure. With an internal policy of bullying and forcing to code fast, ship fast, and with AI I see that coming really soon. And it happens the weeks I have to renew my subscription, meh 🥲
@chema @davidrevoy @darkbeth thanks for this context. I'm going to email the foundation right now: https://proton.me/foundation Yen seems to be on the board, too, though.
Have any of you decided to migrate away? If so, what did you try / where did you go?
I tried IVPN and like it as a replacement for Proton VPN, but for email and calendar, my two frontrunners (Tuta and Runbox) each have drawbacks.
@darkbeth @chema @Meznor Yes, I started something, using the hosting solution I have ( davidrevoy.com , hosted at OVH) , they have a built-in webmail service. I'm trying to setup first a simple redirection and keep my protonmail account for the two years (subscription was already paid, meh) to be sure no email points to it and work on it here and there, until everything will be migrated hopefully.
Ah, that sounds like a good option. Maybe I'll take a look at hosts like that too.
I have less than a week left on my annual sub, and I know there's no getting around paying for another month at this point, but at least I was able to swap the annual out for monthly for now.
@darkbeth Yes, it's a solid option. The main drawbacks: the spam filter is very primitive, and this options also feels to me a bit like a going back before 2010; when I used a mail client and not a webmail only.
But after a bit of tweaking, I found that installing a client (tested Geary), setting up IMAP is not that much a big chore and really usable.
OVH proposes their own webmail software, coming with the hosting plan, and it's not that bad too in case I need access on a public machine.
@davidrevoy Now see, this is helpful.
I haven't used IMAP in decades now, and I was looking into it this morning because Runbox's webmail interface is pretty rough, and I barely even know where to start. KMail? (comes with Fedora)---people say it's crap. Thunderbird? Don't really want Mozilla these days.
I saw Geary, but didn't look into it yet. Maybe that'll be an option.
Also, I just looked up my domain registrar (INWX), and they do, indeed, have email hosting. Gotta look into this now.
@darkbeth Nice for your domain+email hosting!
If you explore the mail clients on Linux and find a good one, let me know. Same feeling here about Thunderbird/KMail (and not fan of Evolution, and also I'm not nerd enough to have all in CLI with Mutt 😅 )
@darkbeth maybe we can do a user-driven petition to fire their CEO?! I'm in the same boat.
