You ever think about how many separate dystopian things had to coincide in order to make the AI-shaped region of the polycrisis so fucking bad?
An incomplete list!
1. Scifi novels, movies, and games quite rightly have used AI as an analogy for exploring social issues, but a complete lack of critical reading skills has left us with entirely missing the point of that analogy.
2. A common narrative device in TV and movies has characters interacting with computers in an AI-ish way for expediency on screen, and people again completely are unable to read storytelling devices as anything other than literal.
3. The Torment Nexus problem.
4. Software monoculture means that only a few companies and/or institutions need to make things worse to really ruin your life.
5. Computing literacy is fucking *abysmal*, so software dev is treated as a mystery cult at the *best* of times.
6. Speaking of cults and monocultures, maybe it's not a good thing that the higher-ups of just about every tech company are all part of the same three mutually antagonistic endtimes sex cults?
@xgranade I often note that people missed Animism so much that we *built* it. We built objects "vast and cool and unsympathetic" because we *craved* a Demon-Haunted World.
