Patient: "I continue to be in pain."
Doctor: "But the philosophy of physical therapy is that <the problem is over after some treatment sessions> and you had them"
Patient: "Well, I continue to be in pain."
Doctor, exasperated: "But the philosophy of physical therapy..."
Where do they find people who argue like this?
@johannab IMHO the step from defending such a nonsensical response to actively spreading misinformation is very small. Both require the suspension of any kind of reflection and critical thinking, both for speaker and listener. And if (supposedly highly educated) doctors do that, what hope does the rest of humanity have?
What about an honest answer such as "We do not know how to help you" or "your insurance only covers it up to here". But then honest answers are also generally in short supply.
I have never respected a medical professional more than the one i woke up to find sitting on the end of my hospital bed, hugging his own knees, and saying "OMG please stop being sick. We have no idea what is going and are doing everything we can! but this is extreme!".
I'm not dead because a Chief of Medicine in a faraway city was determined to treat me as a patient, and to fully admit he was not at all that sure of himself at times
I am very intolerant textbook confidence since then.
@johannab exactly. There is no “the one true book” that has all the answers, in medicine or elsewhere, and we all need to have the humility to accept that we simply don’t know most things. But we can hard to try and find out.
Of course there is also:
Patient: "I'm happy to explore whatever other avenues there are".
Doctor: <changes subject really quickly>
