Getting dozens of these
@blogdiva @pluralistic many years ago i thought it would be fun to send a million emails asking the recipient for a dollar. adolescent me figured if even a tiny fraction sent me a dollar, id be swimming in money and could buy a new pc.
i learned a lot about my ISP and email infrastructure that day
@pluralistic he can make all
of those requests go away, for a small financial gift.
@pluralistic The AI attention tax.
I mean, you *could* consider it. Doesn't mean you'd send it to them. 😂
@pluralistic Anthropic desperately trying to open up a new revenue stream I see : p
@pluralistic "Ooooo, a talking moose wants my credit card number! That's only fair."
@pluralistic is it the first time someone tried brutal honesty for spam messages? Can hardly call them scam anymore lol
@pluralistic does it work? Asking for scientific purposes, for a friend... for a scientist friend.
@pluralistic I'm kinda down on the whole singularity shtick these days, but can I just say, thanks to LLMs THE SPAMULARITY IS NIGH
Have you seen this Paul Krugman article where he quotes Azeem Azhar?
"Azhar thinks that we’ll move instead to a system of partially closed domains, like AOL in its early years or the SABRE system used by travel agents, which are difficult but not impossible for people and institutions outside those domains to access."
Aka, the open internet as we knew and loved it is toast.

I mean, I figured this to be the case once AI saw uptake. Not because I’m insightful, but because I think it’s a natural consequence.
One way of getting there that I find interesting is that humans are no longer the “fittest” creatures in the Internet. It’s now an “AI”/bot domain that is ultimately uncomfortably alien and difficult for humans. Before, it was unbroken ground we naively explored. But then the corporate empire builders showed up and then they bred and released their orcs.
@pluralistic lol and to Switzerland of all places >.<
@pluralistic infinite ughhhhhhhhhh
@pluralistic Who wouldn't want a small monetary gift for no specific reason 💵
I read that as a "small monastery gift" and wondered if that was likely to be honey, or cheese, or maybe a CD of chants.
I admit to being somewhat disappointed.
@pluralistic did the clankers discover internet panhandling?
I love that the AI apocalypse will be apparently conducted with handwritten cardboard signs from street medians.
@adelie @pluralistic its incredlbly tempting to dress up like a giant foam space invader and stand on a corner with a huge sign saying 'ai ate my boss' and a qr code where people can send bitcoin just to see wtf happens
i imagine Damiano as a bored househusband from the italian side of Switzerland, trapped in a loveless gay marriage in the german side. Damiano, while pretending his short shorts are a little too tight, slowly delects a chocolate bombom with one hand, whilst hitting the send email kite with other. all the while, a clock cookoos incessantly in the background.
