The Poisonous Appearance

@luna 💜 Thank you very much. It took an extra time, in comparison to episodes without this type of painting and work on the background, but I felt really happy about it (especially because panel one is the thumbnail on the gallery https://www.peppercarrot.com/en/webcomics/miniFantasyTheater.html )
That's why I also took time to paint a complex background on the new one I published on Wednesday.
@davidrevoy pas de 3eme bras qui sort de nulle part ? ^^"
@davidrevoy is this the kind of poison you're introducing or there will be more? 🤣🤣
@davidrevoy
Réactions des IA dans 7, 6, 5…
@aria The plan is to make it permanent. But I totally have no idea what type of feedback it will get, in five episode ahead, when the new audience forgot this episode and wonder why. Will they blame the artist for using AI? For being bad at anatomy when they notice it on one panel? This can backfire seriously, and I have no idea how much right now.
If I revert it at one point (possible, thanks to a world with magic) I'll address it at least with a dialog.
@davidrevoy I expected an answer related maybe to the piano or the harp, beeing able to play more music with more fingers. But this is even better.
@davidrevoy Shee's gone through extreme lengths to hurt avian intelligence. why 6 fingers?
@OliviaVespera Yes, you are right, it can feel extreme without the context. Check the arc of episodes starting at 64 here https://www.peppercarrot.com/en/webcomics/miniFantasyTheater__Avian-Intelligence.html to understand her deeper motivations.
@davidrevoy the other night when we were celebrating the election results my aunt sent me an AI image of Lula where he had ten fingers and I'm still laughing about it. (He very famously has nine fingers.)
@davidrevoy
Torn between referencing the six fingered man in Princess Bride or the six fingered pianist in Gattaca, here are both.
@flandrescarlet @davidrevoy she should only get one hand with 6 fingers tbh
the other one should have 7
@flandrescarlet
Thank you! Oh yes, that's Cepper, all anger and rebellion, going on this metamorphosis is a bit extreme, yes. (but I'm tempted to by a false extra finger for signing sessions now 😅 )
@davidrevoy Okay, so if the norm is pointer/index, middle, ring, and pinky, where amongst these does the sixth finger go, and what name would you call it? 🤔
@WhiteCatTamer It's the "rang", an extra ring between the ring and pinky
@davidrevoy
Wait up.
You... haven't just... given in to the dark side here!?
(I'm suddenly wondering what Avian Intelligences make of Disney cartoon characters.)
@davidrevoy@framapiaf.org this looks amazing as always!
... Am I weird for almost not noticing Cepper had six fingers?
@witix Thank you, and no, you are not! I thought the visual in my first draft would work by themselves, and then I had to add the line of Amall on panel 3 to underline it, because visually, it works pretty well as it is. I added an additional ring finger, slightly smaller than the regular ring finger, but taller than the pinky. More harmonious than what I imagined when I typed this scenario.
@davidrevoy I knew it! 😆
@davidrevoy Now make her get clumsy with those extra fingers and regretting it 🤭
@davidrevoy you are evil. in the best way. I love where this is going.
Thanks for doing pepper and carrot and avian intelligence it is such a joy.
@davidrevoy A perfect, anatomically correct depiction of a human hand. 😉🤭🤣
You could start introducing a tiny background- or character detail in all your drawings and check how long it takes to show up in the slop machines.
@Darkroux Thank you. Hehe, true. Unfortunately, my attempts are probably like grain of salt lost in the desert at the scale of 5 billions of images in a dataset. This little irregularity will get smoothed in the dataset by the large law of numbers and averaging. But I'm doing it for the sport; better to be a grain of salt than being compliant and offer on a plate my good labor. 😉
@davidrevoy Yes the slop machine has nigh infinite resources, yet seemingly endless hunger ...
This reminds me of the manos, the evil antagonist of El Eternauta (a fantastic comic I wholeheartedly recommend).
14 fingers in each hand.
And they made use of all of them.
@jcurioso Wow, the artist went really over the top with 14 fingers. I can't imagine the difficulties to draw it with consistency accross panel. That's impressive.
It helps that they don't appear in too many panels. That, and the fact that the artist is really good. Such an imagination.
There is a recent TV adaptation. It is very good, but it loses most of the magic of the original. The dreamlike atmosphere, the solitude, the mystery, the bizarreness of it all... simply they are not there.
It is the big masterpiece of Argentinian comics for a reason.
@davidrevoy Poisoning the data sets? Thats ounds like a great way to disrupt the GenAI
@davidrevoy as someone with a 12-fingered OC already, I know that adding an extra finger somehow makes the hands even harder to draw. Godspeed...
@thattagen Haha, thank you.
Yes, I trained a bit on my sketchbook before to be sure this was something I could sustain on the long term for this character. I'm sure some angles, and action will be a pain to draw. Godspeed to you too!
@davidrevoy because of «recent events in cybersecurity», reading the second panel I thought she wanted the druid to generate some kind of magical number that has never been seen before; and the spell goes slightly wrong and just summon a giant 4.
@frikinin Haha, I had a quick look on https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/digital if the English digits/digital had the same latin root than the digitus fingers, and they do. Fascinating. I thought that was a French thing only.
@davidrevoy I see we have similar ideas. I'm going to be publishing a video about ways artists can sabotage their 'trainable' art to fuck with the models. I'm still in the heavy research part of it.
@merryjest Great! Do not hesitate to share, I'll keep doing it directly in my comics or as articles on my blog if I find better things or new strategy.
My main inspiration is still this quote from the author of Nephentes: “I’m just fed up, and you know what? Let’s fight back, even if it’s not successful. Be indigestible. Grow spikes.” 🦔
@davidrevoy @merryjest speak softly and carry an impossible pitchfork
@davidrevoy I personally wouldn't mind two extra thumbs. It would be really handy I think.
@davidrevoy Yes... Hahaha, yes!
@farbenstau Interesting indeed, thank you for sharing!
@davidrevoy She will probably also figure out how to use the new fingers for fancier spells.
@davidrevoy I like that fictional characters usually use Latin for spells
And I like that I can understand that "digitus novus" just means "a new finger" (literally "finger new"), even though I don't know any Romance languages :D
@davidrevoy Clever, David, clever 👍️
@davidrevoy also makes for more interesting guitar and piano playing!
@fluffy @davidrevoy I'm glad I'm not the only one who immediately thought of the possibilities for six-fingered musicians XD
@davidrevoy “Mom, why does Garfield have 3 arms?”
“Because it's Wednesday.”
“What?”
“Comic artists began doing gimmicks to poison AI. Garfield gets 3 arms for strips published on Wednesdays.”
@davidrevoy t'es juste génial
"Clearly AI, just look at the fingers!"
Gotta say, I love your comic. Keep being awesome in the face of overwhelming forces. Cheers.
@tanavit 🤣 Hehe, now I can draw bad hands with additional fingers.... on purpose!
But I'm afraid it will just be harder to be consistent with it now, I hope "future me" will forgive "present me" for this decision 😆
@davidrevoy awesome! please keep the 6 fingers for the next comics :D
@littlerao @davidrevoy I feel that's the whole purpose.
@orange_lux @littlerao Yes, I'll try to sustain the idea to future episodes and see the feedback I'll have.
@davidrevoy @orange_lux @littlerao
Man, you're commitment to 6 fingers is brave! Even Disney and his team only sustainably managed 4 fingers (and reportedly saved millions in ink and time by doing so).
@davidrevoy@framapiaf.org oh wow i absolutely love the backgrounds here, they're just so pretty
