Captured another drive-by shot of my favorite building in Sacramento
@pattykimura @Alice@gram.social I love that you're asking these questions because I sometimes feel like my cropping choices appear questionable, but it's really me just doing my best with whatever I have to work with.
Here is the full shot. A lot of my composition is based off my obsession with needing to fit things within squares and wanting to exclude as much external noise as possible.
In this case, I cropped out the sides because I didn't think it was adding value and then I was left with the street, the building, and the sky, and I decided that the sky was adding more value than the street so I shifted everything downward until the balance felt right.
@Alice@beige.party @pattykimura @Alice@gram.social I think you made absolutely the right cropping choices with this one, it is all the better for it! 💙

You made the right choice.
@Alice @lisamelton when I was very little my dad was head of R&D for Continental Baking Corp - who, at the time, owned Hostess Foods.
Ie my dad was, for a time, in charge of the food design of Twinkies and Wonder Bread and all the other products of early 1980’s Hostess Foods.
(We got to taste the research - As a rule any new product we liked as a family didn’t end up making it to the market)
When I was about 8 however he took another job that moved us from NY to Chicago
@Rycaut @Alice@gram.social @lisamelton I’m curious about this part:
"We got to taste the research - As a rule any new product we liked as a family didn’t end up making it to the market"
Wouldn't they want a product that seemed to be universally liked?
@Alice@beige.party @Alice@gram.social @lisamelton keep in mind this was the early 1980’s.
We got to taste stuff like new flavors of hostess fruit pies that my dad’s team were working on - generally if our family liked it the flavor was more complex than they ended up wanting to sell to the market at that time. This was almost 45 years ago and I was 6 or so so I’m not remembering all the flavors we rejected but basically we weren’t the typical American household - we liked stronger flavors
@Rycaut @Alice@gram.social @lisamelton Oh, fascinating. The family thinks this pie is boring. Greenlight it!
@Alice fantastic, the colours and composition, lovely.
@bobthomson70 @Alice@gram.social I’m always surprised when I get a clear shot because @KevBot usually notices the building at the last minute and then I fumble to grab my phone to take a quick photo.
One of these days, I’m just going to go there and walk around to take some "real" photos.
@Alice@beige.party @Alice@gram.social @KevBot even more impressive taking that when not standing still. I can't even get a video of passing jet fighter by the time I get my phone going :)
@bobthomson70 @Alice@gram.social @KevBot To be fair, neither the building nor car are moving nearly as fast as a jet fighter. 🤣
@Alice The framing choice - majority of frame as blue sky, was that by chance led by device limitations or a deliberate choice?
The use of negative atmospheric space juxtaposed against a low horizon nominally mundane Wonderbread building is striking on so many levels. The layers of interpretation of the composition as art and social commentary...!!
Really awesome pic, no matter how you got there. Your instincts are brilliant.
When I used to make film shorts, I often discovered later meaning in what I assumed was accident. I learned the role of the unconscious in making art. Still learning it.
Best wishes as ever, Alice. I remain a fan of your art.
