#Emacs turns 50 this year: https://www.technologyreview.com/2026/10/20/1145399/emacs-turns-50/
Well, not the Emacs we know today that RMS wrote. That's 8 years younger. But it's still a good opportunity to read Monnier and Sperber 2020, *Evolution of Emacs*: https://pdf.stafforini.com/monnier-2020-evolution-of-emacs.pdf (PDF).
A neat overview of the very complicated history of Emacs, it explains a lot of today's quirks. Of course, in the six years since, Emacs has made leaps and bounds and improved everywhere.
It's fun to use a piece of software older than myself (both versions are, though not by much)
@aleks Wasn't the current GNU Emacs originally written by Gosling? I thought RMS took over development of it later?
