Today I bought a pack of assorted washers of various sizes, which were described with dimensions like “28mm × 32mm”, which was simultaneously (A) perfectly comprehensible [inner diameter × outer diameter], (B) hilariously weird, and (C) an unforgivable transgression against the sacred dictates of mathematics and geometry.

@gregeganSF Perhaps we are supposed to think of “a x b” as coordinates “(a, b)” in washer space.
I have seen “a x b” used for coordinates when the usual notation could be confused for the open interval between a and b. Which I guess is ironic since the material of the washer occupies the interval of radii between an and b.
@gregeganSF How do you know its diameter and not radius or circumference?
And what about the thickness?
