@jonah @DevlinLeathercraft I live in a better place with the privacy, quiet, and outrageous views I need. I'm also free of the ball and chain that kept me back from doing so many of the things I wanted to do. I feel more relaxed and happier, despite the world going to hell around us. (I don't doomscroll.)
@jonah It just isn't.
@jonah I don't have to sit under a flickering fluorescent in a stale room across town to use the internet. mRNA vaccines exist. eink screens exist. latex rubber office products are a lot less common as an everyday allergy trigger. fake leather boots actually last a season. most people have less lead in their bloodstream. everything I do in a day uses way less electricity, and more of it comes from renewables. I dunno, I think the world's looking pretty good, aside from the rate of disasters.
@jonah Most stuff is dirt cheap, if you don't mind second-hand. And I mean really cool stuff like stoves, TVs, clothes, shoes.
@jonah HIV is long term survivable, HPV vaccine is effective and widely available, solar power is vastly cheaper and easier to obtain.
@jonah @quota_atypique @jonah We have an easier access to a more diverse set of cultural artifacts. There’s less hype effect about culture stuff.
@jonah
Diabetes technology. Both CGM sensors for near real time readings exist, and pump automation that makes use of it, so that you don't need to make as many decisions yourself (including while you're asleep!), and helping keep your readings in range, thus helping you stay healthier for longer.
@Em0nM4stodon
@jonah deaths due to heart disease have dropped by like 10% to 60% basically everywhere (except Thailand, oddly). This is alongside a drop in all-cause mortality rate (except COVID, fuck COVID)
@jonah well for one thing, there are no airplanes exploding our buildings. small victories
@jonah for me as a blind person, 25 years ago the only jobs I could take whould have been ones I'd not want to do at all and I'd also not be able to be as independent as I am today without the internet.
@jonah There's a long list of reasons humanity is better off today, and most of them are being systematically reversed by irresponsible, greedy, corrupt governments.
100 years ago, male lifespan was about 60 years in the US. In 2000, it was 75. Imagine what may happen in the future to lower it, looking at things like food inspection, vaccine challenges, and other legal changes.
@jonah 25 years ago you’d rarely see a wild bald eagle. Now I see them pretty regularly.
