The number of people in tech I know who are around my age and at-present unemployed and asking “Am I… retired? M-maybe?” is more than half of one hand. Just the ones I know of, anyway.

Though most of the industry's code bases are now slop, I still seem to enjoy solving the integration challenges between systems that were never meant to talk to each other.
With the exception of some outliers, LLM usage seems to be coming down too. But I don't know if the new norm of 60-hour workweeks is going away anytime soon. People's health seems to be getting worse too.

Even after things improve, if ever, I hope people will never forget the fact that our employers were always holding us in contempt and would get rid of us the first chance they get.

(I am one of these people, to be clear)
@jmac I'll be there in eleven months.
@jmac I just met one across the street when the fire trucks came
@shapr I’m not sure if this is a reference to something or if you’ve had an interesting day
I had an interesting day.
Due to fire alarms and gurgling water noises,
fire trucks arrived to break into the house across the street that's been empty for months.
So I finally met the person across the street who lives in the house next to the empty house, and he's unemployed and maybe retired if he can't find anything.
@jmac On the good side, the person across the street knows enough Estonian that I learned that language has the same word for blue as Finnish.
(It was a good kind of interesting!)
@jmac @philsplace it came as something of a shock to me. A little bit changing times, a little bit VCs wanting "young and naive" for their stable rather than "grizzled and suspicious." a little bit neurospicy brain putting its foot down and setting a hard limit on how much BS it's willing to sign up for.
