Microsoft offers 60,000 employees a voluntary exit 😱 The AI affecting is real in IT sector. This is company’s efforts to cut costs amid AI adoption, per Bloomberg. Personnel on select teams in the US, Canada, India, and the UK at a vice president level and below will be eligible. This reflects ~27% of Microsoft's total workforce https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/10/26/introducing-a-voluntary-exit-offer/
@nixCraft I'm really sorry. This is all my fault. I recently turned my laptop to Linux after decades of Microsoft OS.
@nixCraft big tech mostly consista of smoke and mirrors at this point. No wise person or business should rely on their services.
@nixCraft so no more Windows? GOOD
@nixCraft
Microsoft's cutting almost 30% of their workforce may mostly be due to #AI but it may also be due to the coming reckoning with the tech sovereignty trend.
Orgs outside the US are prioritizing non-US and/or homegrown tech alternatives due to US fascism. Microsoft, Google, Meta, etc. are on the global chopping block.
@nixCraft If i understand this whole layoff stuff correctly (from big tech in general) they are shifting priorities (canceling projects etc…) towards building datacenters and LLM development rather than just straight out replacing people with AI.
So the layoffs are just there to free some more budget for datacenters.
Continuing to develop their exisiting software doesn’t seem to get the shareholders excited i guess.
@nixCraft To be fair, 60k are eligible - not 60k headcount reductions.
Voluntary leave is preferable to the alternative.
@nixCraft Microslop is an evil pos on a good day.
@nixCraft Holy crap. This is not gonna go well for anyone.
This is such a brutal thing. Yes job loss is not nice even if they get some money to exit. The whole IT sector is now a race to the bottom until AI causes a massive job and stock market crash and then nobody will have a job, pensions will be burned out in stock market scams and meanwhile, some of these AI tech bros will have made billions in profits. Well done, Microsoft and every other batshit crazy AI company.
@nixCraft coreweave (CRWV), a prominent bitcoin mining company now pivoting to building AI data centers, has lost abt half its stock value since August. Whee.
@nixCraft And this is assuming it doesn't work. I would very much like to see LLMs finally hit a ceiling and stall but I keep getting surprised how far autocomplete in a loop with tools to keep it on track can get.
All this reminds me of the scene from Oppenheimer after the successful test where he tried to give them advice but since he's already done his part, they dismiss him with "we’ll take it from here, doctor".
this will lead to more evidence for all to see that
1. AI error rate is intolerable
2. you need humans to build things
3. corporate memory and human expertise is not something you can't just switch back on
it will be good to many organisations to see a few high profile orgs fail like this
i'm personally waiting for the absolutely massive clusterf**k from the use of AI in the public/government sector
@nixCraft "AI", not AI! It's not just code being stolen anymore but literally behavioral patterns extracted from those very employees by forcing them to use LLMs before getting fired.
@nixCraft "but everyone will have more leisure"
