Fediverse have a lot more features.
I opened once bluesky - it has no privacy features, I did not find any, my impression was everything is open, broadcasted globally.
For comparison, mastodon settings is full of privacy toggles. @Bonfire even have circles and extra permissions, with coming encryption, and account data migration, and groups etc.
And made by the people, not entshitified, as mentioned above, which is also very important. Also truly decentralized, has local community feel.
But Bluesky have other advantages:
1) Money
2) Focused team.
3) Stronger momentum.
4) It is larger network, because people like centralized platforms and flock in there.
5) Governments usually like big business, so such approach might be attractive too.
6) I just researched, it is also evolving protocol. They plan privacy features called "Atproto Spaces", and „groups“ in the future https://atproto.com/blog
If I would be government, I might use ATProto, but since I am not government, I may suggest NL government to invest and promote fediverse, so to strengthen it. Maybe investigate bonfire, because it is very innovative full of features,
and finance forgejo federation (as you already use it, except it would cost a lot and take time) @forgefed
Forgejo (and project management) federation would be amazing.
@janvlug Use at some point: both. Use right now: ActivityPub. Contribute to right now: both.
ActivityPub is the more stable design in that it doesn't come with random amounts of unknowns: For example ATproto's relays are mandatory components that require a BigTech-scale implementation with little idea on how to scale down - that's a choke point.
@janvlug https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/ looks more like an established standard and the workgroup is reopened (for active standardisation/development)
@janvlug
I speak primarily on behalf of the #ActivityPub fediverse, though I think there's nothing wrong with a multi-protocol social web.
ATProto did some things very well, like give great guidance for developers to implement the protocol. I think that this played a major part in its rapid adoption. This was possible because a small dedicated and well-paid team could focus on greenfield technology, and learn from existing technologies. The big drawback is that this required a VC-funded entity. It is more a "tech as usual" approach. Due to that reason I think today the Atmosphere has highest chance to face corporate takeover and the inevitable enshittification.
For ActivityPub and fediverse I just posted the following about the "made by the People, for the People" aspects, and the fascinating social dynamics that are at play with that..
