I broke down and bought a real laptop over the weekend. I've had an around-the-house 2-in-1 for the last 7 years, which has suited me well, as I have a great desktop for work and music stuff. But given the near-certainty of the hardware market getting worse for at least the next couple of years, and the knowledge that upcoming new things will necessitate more work out of my house, it was time.
Used Thinkpad P-series is on the way. I've never bought a P series before, I feel like I graduated.
@benofbrown me too! My computer-wise bestie @composergreg has told me for years to stop fucking around and just buy Thinkpads, and I'm finally listening to him 15 years later. He has a P-series Thinkpad from 2010 that still boots and runs happily.
@alisynthesis @composergreg Nice! I also have an old E530 from 2013, and apart from needing to set the time every time I boot it, it works really well. I don't get a lot of use from it tbh but it's handy from time to time.
@benofbrown I have an E-series from that era that has been running HAOS (home assistant) for about 5 years now with no downtime. The battery is completely dead, of course, but it's a trooper!
@alisynthesis I wanted to get something better for like the past 7 years, each time I think it will get better it gets worse. Good luck
@m750 haha, exactly! I finally came to terms with the fact that it probably ain't going to get better, so I bought something that should last a good long time.
Maybe I will name it SOLARPUNK, bc it might be my post-apocalypse computer.
Also of note for me this Monday morning: I'm finding myself ever less tolerant of people's negativity in replies, including my own. If you don't have anything nice to say, shut the fuck up. (Wait, was that what my grandmother used to say?)
@alisynthesis I hear you! 🖤
Btw, stfu is sadly my fave phrase nowadays
@elifyalvac haha, it could be worse. your favorite phrase could be "well, akshually..."
I say this as a person with some real "well akshually" tendencies.
srsly, I don't know why people need to shit on other people's happiness. I posted about a book I was enjoying, and someone came in to say why they hated it. And then when I went back to read it, it was somehow less enjoyable. Maybe it's my problem, but fuck that noise. I don't have to take that shit from some internet person.
@alisynthesis sounds like a loser!
What’s the book?

@alisynthesis never used a P series but my work laptop is a T series and that's excellent. I'm a big fan of Lenovo laptops.
