Turned on the radio today, and some (Japanese) band (I think?) was being interviewed, and a woman the band (the vocalist?) started talking about how she had asked ChatGPT about some friend, and I realized from the way she spoke that in Japan, there is a not insignificant demographic of people, mostly women, who use chatbots basically as fortunetellers. It was so depressing, I changed the channel before I could even learn who was being interviewed.

@tsturm If I had given it any thought, I could have predicted it. It's perfect for such people, really, because it has none of the emotional risk of talking about your fears or hopes to a real human being, and unlike a human fortuneteller it is free (for the moment). It also flatters you and supports you even when you are obviously wrong. And everyone remains largely convinced that LLMs really are "genius" and all-knowing.
@RachelThornSub LLMs are truly a mirror to the human psyche. All it takes is a chat window to go like "You are absolutely correct!" several times a day, and half the population is losing their minds.

That's a turn of events I had not expected...
