What’s wrong with this? Wrong answers only.
The data is leaking out of the middle socket.
@futzle there’s an open port!
@futzle Headphones like this only work when they are connected to a Walkman.
@futzle That panel has three network jacks, so the loopback test requires a three-headed cable, ie: Cat-3. Cat-5 and Cat-6 are common, and they can go higher but I've never seen a Network Engineer do field testing with a Cat-o'-nine-tails.
@futzle Don't want to trip over the cable, keep it nice and neat!
I don't really know what people were trying to achieve with the above cabling, which I'd disentangled some other stuff from prior to taking the photo, so maybe no one even realized they were making a loop.
Back at the server room, D13 was patched into a switch, and D15 wasn't patched at all, so at least the switch wasn't at risk of a broadcast storm, though I do have STP enabled because, well, sometimes that ☝🏻happens.
@futzle the cable isn’t long enough
@futzle wall plug should be higher to keep cabling off the floor
@futzle you gotta form the loop into a Lissajous pattern (like the ABC logo) to cancel out packet echoes.
@futzle Good illustration of tech sector financing right now
@futzle D14 is so lonely
@futzle pretty that's a cross over so the cable should be yellow
@futzle needs a splitter so D14 can join in too.
@futzle the last time I saw this novel configuration was the second busiest day I ever had on that particular helpdesk
