@foolishowl @rowan wow.. imagine it being so bad that even the UN sees the contradiction ..
@Li @foolishowl @rowan Yet the UN lacks enforcement teeth so children rights(and human rights in general) keep being abused without punitive consequences for the adults who run things.
@Li @foolishowl @rowan it is a fucking farce to people like my family. Almost all my elders are dead now. Many of my living family members are still suffering from consequences of biowarfare from USA terrorism. I have no faith in UN anymore.
@foolishowl @rowan for me, as a living war baby survivor - all the UN does is let crimes against humanity be documented but rarely ever truly prosecuted/rarely grant justice over so much injustices. It helps a lot of people feel better about recognizing human rights violations while permitting more human rights abuses to continue because there is no true enforcement these days. It's a shitass bandaid on global wounds. The most marginalized global citizens never stopped suffering while people in suits convene to discuss past/current suffering without helping much at all.
@foolishowl @rowan
This is an ongoing battle for justice, going on multiple generations for our family now. This is personal for us.
good parents are like good cops. just because they can exist without exploiting their disproportionate power over a child doesn’t mean they should have carte blanche authority and endless exploitation potential.
communities should raise children
and before anyone gets mad about that comparison, consider the reality of what many kids go through at the hands of their parents. they deserve better
and if it helps you, theoretically angry reader – it’s good for parents too. the commitment of raising a child is distributed and it becomes the responsibility of many. all of which are equally accountable. less stressed parents are good for everyone
no btw it wont back down off this. most trauma and mental illness stems from childhood events and considering the rate of mental illness, the mistreatment of children becomes an ever increasing priority. not to mention, why the fuck would we not want to care for our most vulnerable
think of the children, what about the children, protect the children …. right up until we suggest the radical idea that children are people and can’t ethically be property.
@rowan That's literally the position of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. In negotiations, Russia proposed adding language defining parental rights, but the committee chair objected that it directly contradicted the principle of children's rights, and the proposal was withdrawn.
"As of 25 October 2026, 196 countries are party to it, including every member of the United Nations except the United States."
