Well, I’m not surprised but obviously I’m disappointed in BC: voters chose to ‘send a message’ to Premiere Eby and by doing so signed us all up for four years of MAGA-adjacent, chaos, incompetence and cruelty.

My heart goes out to the LGBTQ2IA+, BIPOC, disabled, unhoused, low-income and other vulnerable folks who are going to bear a disproportionate share of the weight of this decision.

My heart breaks for the continued, accelerated destruction of our beautiful environment, and for the people who will lose their homes, businesses, and lives to the climate catastrophes that we’ve locked-in for future generations.

I’m sure the billionaires are pleased, though. 🫤

@fname Back in 2013 Darrell Dexter got his ass kicked, including losing his own seat and ensuring the NDP won't form government in NS for at least a generation. He got a very nice job in the private sector.

@fname I'm a very big believer in electoral reform, too. But I wonder sometimes... Though the results under an ER system will better reflect the actual will of the people *who voted*, will it really change much if we can't get more people to vote?

@ZenHeathen @fname yea same. If only 15% of eligible voters turn out, you have bigger problems than the electoral system counting the votes. A different system is also broken, which is civic engagement. In this context, low turnout makes sense given the idiotic gamble Eby took to initiate this.

Voter turnout was abysmal in BC (not surprising but disappointing). Comparing the final results from 2024 with the preliminary results from 2026 (thus these numbers will change) it looks like 313,043 less people voted this time around... with 274,562 of those being NDP voters in 2024 (877%). Even the number of Conservative voters declined, despite their massive seat win, by 49,884. The only party to gain votes was the Green party, which received 23,100 more votes in 2026 than 2024 (an 11.7% increase).

Yet again we are seeing the consequences of people not voting and how it always seems to aid the hateful right. We are failing as a society to get people to realise that not voting is one of the worst things you can do in response to crappy politicians.... and I don't know how to get that message across

A large part of the problem, IMHO, is that we keep seeing parties campaigning on a platform of "We suck, we are going to continue to suck, but the other side is worse so vote for us anyways to keep them out of power"; this seems to consistently lead to voters throwing up their hands and walking away in frustration.

This is the worst possible response because what we need to emphasise is that there is always another option rather than simply disengaging. I haven't run the riding by riding numbers but I'd hypothesize that if all 272,562 people who voted NDP in 2024 and then didn't vote in 2026 had shown up and voted Green the election results would be very different. Eby would still be out but the Conservatives wouldn't be in as the Green's would hold the balance of power.

This needs to be a lesson for the rest of Canada... #VOTE just fucking VOTE!
