i am in a taxi and there is a small screen in the taxi showing ads with sound and it just showed me an ad for itself inviting me to advertise on their platform and mentioning that the ads are targeted based on who is in the taxi which is the creepiest shit ever
@palomakop The advertising industry definitely figured out how to make a lot of money from being super creepy. Weirdest business model in history!
@i_dabble absolutely. i guess one thing that made it hit harder is that it was an in-person thing. like if you walked into a building and it greeted you by name, that would be strange. but also, random websites and stuff are tracking people all the time, and if they all said "hi, ${first name}" to people who weren't logged in, i don't think people would like it.
@palomakop Haha, it would! Maybe it could be defeated by making a law, requiring them to directly show the user what data they have access to about them in the cookie banner. And it all has to be visible, so the more data it is, the bigger the banner. 😄 Having to disclose the "partners" (at least in the EU) is a good start, though.
I recently read a piece, I think on Vice, where they identified ICE agents through data brokers, including names and addresses, which seemed like it shouldn't be allowed, legally or ethically. I mean, on the one hand, good use case for once, but what a f-ing privacy nightmare. Glad to live in the EU. There are probably loopholes, though, where they just don't connect the dots inside the EU or something. But at least somebody seems to be trying... 🤷
it also showed me a screen that said "hi, paloma!" so it definitely knows who i am. though it has mostly showed me ads for condos in manhattan so it must not know me that well. or that's the only people who want to put their ads on a taxi in manhattan.
