@lolitechengineer @phnt @bajax @shibao is there any other common viable containerization product on linux that does single-executable instead of entire containerized os?

@sun @lolitechengineer @bajax @phnt docker (which just wraps around basic linux fundamentals like layers and process groups and such) is literally a way to ship executables without running a duplicate kernel like in a vm, what do you mean
@shibao @bajax @lolitechengineer @phnt my info may be out of date, years ago they had their own versions of several things.
@sun @bajax @lolitechengineer @phnt the only thing that i'm aware of is their own kernel shim but iirc these got turned into containerd-shim and runc which are just standard linux items now and everything's in an open container standard now called OCI
@shibao @phnt @lolitechengineer @sun one thing I do like docker for is running multiple instances of the same service on one server.
@bajax @phnt @lolitechengineer @sun you literally don't have to use docker, you can manually create OverlayFS layers and then create your own namespaces in stock linux, these are included in your kernel already. docker just automates these for you. i'm going to find the great talk that explains how docker works because it's actually really simple, people just don't understand what they're doing at all
@shibao @bajax @lolitechengineer @phnt there was an article years ago about how you can simulate the docker runtime (not the image building) in like 15 lines of bash
@shibao @phnt @lolitechengineer @sun I know how it works lol, but docker is fine for this and I've never really investigated the actual steps for doing it manually
