turns out in professional opera, no one worth taking seriously uses the term "contralto". My teacher, a pro soprano, won't touch it. We agree my speaking voice rests at E3. we have identified my 1st passaggio as C4 and 2nd passaggio as A4. I have demonstrated great coloratura facility and have a bright timbre. Thinking I had her cornered, I said, that is not a mezzo. Which leaves only one possibility....
yes, she says in all seriousness, it is too early to tell but you may be a soprano
@Xibanya can't help but notice that the Italian Wikipedia article on the contralto is huge and has dozens of references and the English one is barely a few short paragraphs 🤔
im like, but no soprano on earth sounds like me. no mezzo on earth sounds like me.
she says yes, you have a very unique, very rare instrument.
...like a golden age soprano!
these people will invent any reason to avoid saying the c word
but yes I have learned from professional opera singer friends that true contraltos in opera classify themselves as "exotic" or "unique" or "cello-like" or "unclassifiable" mezzos, as otherwise they are not taken seriously. I have pro mezzos in my DMs being like, yes I am a contralto too but u have to play their game.
once i went looking i started to see it everywhere. lol that there is a literal taboo over calling a deep female voice what it is
if only we had a category for all these weird mezzos who aren't lyric or dramatic mezzos!
scientists say synthesizing one under lab conditions is still 15 years away
@Xibanya What happens if we just... stop? Just call it what it is?
"u have to play their game" no
on TikTok and Instagram I gave in a few months ago and started tagging my stuff #mezzosoprano rather than #contralto. I won't come off as arrogant and presumptuous for claiming I have a vocal type seen in 5% of cis women, i will come off as humble by claiming i have a vocal type that is totally unique never before seen that no one else in the history of mankind has ever possessed
@Xibanya bitten by a contralto as a child and now they have a fear of them
I hope I don't sound like a creep, but there's something deeply appealing about these videos you make.
@Xibanya Baader–Meinhof deja vu! I just read the word "Contralto" for the first time on the Wikipedia page for "Surface Pressure" from Encanto: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface_Pressure
> Darrow sings "Surface Pressure" in a "muscular" contralto
Surface Pressure
