@jens Again, I don't disagree in principle, but can we point to any other situation where we would do that?
I'm not talking to accessibility issues, because that's different. This is, effectively, consumer choice.
(I run GrapheneOS, but with Google Play Services because value my sanity)
@dajb Yes, literally any situation.
I'm not sure which specific of the EU legislative documents this is stated in, but it all leads back to human rights in the end, which are pretty foundational to the EU as a whole. You cannot be excluded from participation in public life because you don't own a particular item.
@jens Again, I agree. But practically, how is that going to work out?
Users are currently at 0.01% of the installed user base. That 0.01% is itself fragmented between Sailfish, Nura, GrapheneOS, etc.
So let's say that they decide to support those. Then someone comes along saying "I've adapted BeOS for mobile. Me and my three mates are using it and not to support us is discrimination."
Where's the line here?
@dajb The line is where everybody can use it, or it's not required. That's what equitable means.
You cannot draw any other line in a just society.
If it were "a product", you can do whatever you want. But it's not. It's a public service offering.
Get your head around that instead of arguing. This isn't something to discuss, it's a fact borne out of the circumstances in which the thing was conceived.
Practically, the solution in the past has been a low tech fallback.
@dajb Not the point. If it is to be digital infrastructure for the entire EU population, the entire EU population must be able to access it equitably.
