So proud of my hometown. We can make anything less fun
@LeslieBurns I wonder if it’s just terminology. Like, I lived in Dayton for a long time, I was aware that there were restaurants that served a particular local favorite type of pizza. But I don’t think I ever heard anyone refer to it as “Dayton-style.” It was just a local peculiarity.
@jalefkowit @LeslieBurns I feel that the US has become too invested in having distinct, local styles of pizza (having only recently learned about/tried "Colorado pizza").
I vote for a return to just having a local pizza place you love.
@jalefkowit
Lest we forget,... this gem from the motor city. Whose signal achievement was the choice of baking container,...
"The steel pans were made by Dover Parkersburg in the 1930s and 1940s and were originally used as drip trays or to hold small parts or scrap metal in automobile factories. Some 50- to 75-year-old pans are still in use."
Yum! motor oil. 🤮
@jalefkowit at least he’s unsweetened?
Dayton-style pizza is definitely a thing, and the local joints best known for serving it when I was a kid are still at it. If you ever visit someone there they will probably take you to one of them, and then you will get to pretend that you like it
@jalefkowit
Among the best pizza I've ever had : https://www.cleveland19.com/story/30011857/recipe-bar-centos-sunnyside-pizza/
Absolutely delicious! Probably an abomination under God, but so good!
@jalefkowit that’s not pizza, it’s penance on a plate.
@jalefkowit it seems close-ish to St. Louis style pizza which is one of my favorites.
@jalefkowit Thank god for Altoona style pizza for making this monstrosity look reasonable by comparison.
@jalefkowit uhhh I have never heard of this and it looks amazing??
@Sadsquatch If you’re ever in the Greater Dayton Regional Metroplex, stop by Marion’s
@jalefkowit I absolutely will
Of course the greatest pizza experience of my life was a pizza Margherita I ate in Egypt in 1982, a high that I have spent the entire rest of my life fruitlessly trying to reproduce. So what the hell do I know
@jalefkowit Regina style Pizza (yes it's an actual thing) is my favourite. The best pizza I've ever had is from Triffons pizza in Regina.
@jalefkowit well the best apple I’ve ever had was on a hiking trip after discovering we had no access to water, so maybe you just need to recreate that circumstance rather than the pizza itself.
How hard can it be to be young again, right?
@jalefkowit well, all pizzaiolos in Milan are Egyptian so I’m not surprised.
@jalefkowit I read that as "lesser-citied" at first and was like damn, that's cold.
@jalefkowit I grew up and lived in Columbus for most of my life and I have never heard of “Columbus-style” or “Dayton-style”… hmmm.
