Has a worse voting system than first-past-the-post ever been used in real world elections? When we use first-past-the-post, are we literally using the worst voting method of all time?
Because I've been saying that literally any other voting system would be better, but I want to make sure I'm not being unfair to the shitty status quo.
@skyfaller The "jungle primary" system used in California manages to compound the problems of FPP by being both complicated & potentially disenfranchising a divided opposition party.
The automatic runoff if no candidate receives 50% system might seem reasonable in principle, but was instituted in southern states to ensure entrenched (white) majorities would never "accidentally" elect a minority (i.e., Black) candidate.
Democracy's tough because someone's always trying to game the system.
