Switching to @netbsd from Linux has been one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things I have done in the tech world in years.
All of it. The community, the software, reading blogs again to get something to work, joining forums, joining IRC channels. Absolutely all of it.
I'm actually finding joy in tech again.
@fionescu I currently have Xfce 4.20 running. I've been thinking about installing FVWM, though.
@chadmccullough Any particular reason you would go from Xfce to FVWM?
@fionescu Just to see if I can get it working. It was my first graphical environment way back when I first started running Unix and Linux.
@chadmccullough @netbsd Hi Chad, As a long term Linux user (1990's) I am growing disenchanted with the steadily creeping IBM/Redhat monoculture being forced upon users, so I am interested in hearing folk's experiences with alternatives. As I see it FreeBSD is the best choice for Desktops with FreeBSD & OpenBSD both good for Servers and NetBSD occupying a more niche position.
Was the recent announcement by NetBSD disavowing LLM generated code your reason for trying?
@Bahay @chadmccullough @netbsd I think the BSD you use depends in large part on the hardware and what works with it. For me, I've had more desktop success with #OpenBSD. You have to try everything with a machine to see what works.
@chadmccullough @netbsd I'm having fun with my NetBSD VPS. I should also revisit my #SDF account. And I do need a desktop to work with.
@passthejoe @chadmccullough @netbsd wait... how, why I just learnt about the existence of https://sdf.org?
It's amazing! I'll definitely join to #SDF as patron, I'm sold!

@chadmccullough How does your NetBSD desktop look like, if I may ask?
