@jfmezei @chris Speaking as a dual-citizen who wept reading this today, in theory the mechanism is the midterm elections (for which I submitted my absentee ballot a while ago). But that does require an upswelling of a populace who will actively support the right Congress members who can and will make impeachment charges stick. I don’t think the system had ever really been tested like this, not even in the 70s with Nixon or the 90s with Clinton.
@trishalynn @jfmezei without a doubt, we are seeing the nadir of the American political system right now. How much further down will it go? How much closer to outright despotic authoritarianism and/or hereditary monarchy will it get. The next Congress will be the beginning of the answer, not the end.

@chris The USA has shown that there is no mechanism to deal with a Congress that is failing in its duties.
Constitution grants Congress right to impeach (and sepreme court's "immunity" ruling was based on Congress being the judge whether the president is guilty or not). Cabinet right to invoke 25th amendment.
Yet, none of these guardrails are functioning and there is no mechanism to ring the alarm when Congress and Cabinet fail to do their job.
The USA has a king.
