@cwebber absolutely, steamed hams is commentary on the things that led to the LLM tsunami being possible. Only outcomes matter, but one of those desired outcomes is authenticity, so there's a drive to try to fake authenticity too.

@cwebber lmao, remember when they tried to say that "being anti-AI art" was ableist or some shit.

@cwebber

That is very good!

@cwebber
A homecooked meal is that overly salty turkey stuffed with bread based fillings your grandma insists on making every thanksgiving despite you're gluten-intolerant and have been vegan for ten years, and it tastes sourly because it was only a dollar a pound a week ago due to a limited best-before date.

@cwebber "I genuinely don't know if the code that underpins a lot of my creations is of high quality"
also
"Please buy my courses"

@cwebber Thanks to Kraft Mac’n’cheese, cooking is no longer gate-kept.

@cwebber

Claude: "Well vibe-coder, I made it, despite your directions."

@cwebber

My irritation with vibe coding is very similar to my irritation with image generation slop.
It involves very low effort or thought. Sticking a prompt in, getting something random out and then proudly proclaiming "I made that!".

No, no you didn't. You just slapped your name on it. You have no idea how it was made. Worse, it was almost certainly produced with a high percentage of stolen data.

I worry about the future repercussions of sloppy code fixing sloppy code.

@cwebber My former employer hired Brad Frost's team as a consultant and they burned a bunch of money to give us a thin wrapper around a LLM, that introduced a dependency on their own server, and gave us "code" that was a bunch of hardcoded prompts.

So brittle, sloppy, constantly outdated, vendor lock-in, and nonreproducible.

If it wasnt for the 500 character post limit I would have even more bad things to say.

@cwebber

Good point.

It also bothers me because the industry has found a way to charge rent for open source, something we used to own. Now there's nothing left.

And they can yank the lease as soon as we disobey.

While everything that matters is on fire.

@cwebber “Steamed Hams” is also a great description of Techbros.
