Large box with Lenovo logo arrived!
just opening. the giant laptop (T16 gen 3, new or refurbished? either is fine) is uhh big
us keyboard, annoying but livable. EU plug lol
windows 11. copilot key 😭
it's a desktop replacement, you just need to put four legs on it
way too large and heavy to be my daily driver, but i'll set it up as a spare. may keep win11 on long enough to regret my morbid curiosity
named it tattletale (from worm). capable and deeply annoying
@Laventeot my linux laptop has a win10 vm, they just freely offered the extended support lol
i predict (ehh moderate confidence, they might not) they'll extend again just so there aren't a zillion unsupported win10 out there that will never upgrade
not sure i'm interested enough in this to do any work or take it the least bit seriously as an env, lol. will probably just linux it and set it up as a spare
why does windows 11 take so fucking long to install. ubuntu or debian would be done by now and i'd be installing my stuff
lol so much for my windows 11 adventure. after over an hour installing shit, it won't let me log in and keeps running captcha checks on me to use my own fucking laptop. i'll try ubuntu 26.04 on this one instead.
edit: yep byebye win11 rip in piss
The only thing that truly surprises me about what’s happened is that you attempted to bother with windows
@GhostOnTheHalfShell it was installed so i went along to see what would happen!
it was uhhh very dumb
comes with 20 months' warranty, but warranty country is apparentl .nl??
support assures me i can get it fixed in the uk from the uk just fine if needed
keeping a copy of that support chat tho
@davidgerard As I recall, Lenovo warranties are worldwide, like Apple warranties.
@davidgerard@circumstances.run
US layout, Europlug, Dutch support site, you bought a Dutch market computer.
@davidgerard When you install Windows 11, it ceases to be your laptop. They’re just letting you use it occasionally.
…or not at all, apparently.
@gavin57 ubuntu installed in like 15 min, another few for latest apt upgrade
@davidgerard Sounds like you want the cracked version which comes with AliExpress mini-PCs, except that I nuked the install as soon as I could figure out how to get into the BIOS to boot from USB. This step took most of the time to install Debian. I think I got through three keyboards before I found one that it'd pay attention to before Win11 started.
@pndc i think "want" is not the word to apply here
@davidgerard David, I literally just updated my Win11 box last night. Still on 23H2 but I get security updates. I ground out most of the updates with winget, not the odious Microsoft Store, and I even managed to remove Edge in the process. I'd highly recommend using ExplorerPatcher to get rid of the web-app start menu because the system's literally unusable without it if one's connection is in any way lacking. MSEdgeRedirect blocks Copilot very effectively.
@davidgerard It takes even longer if you want a lightning fast image viewer, because you have to start from Windows 7 and upgrade via Windows 10.
No, I don't need the Photo app with all its editing functions to load, when I want to edit something, GIMP is right there.
@davidgerard It has to reticulate the splines with Copilot these days and that's an expensive operation.
@neil it's got an NPU u kno
@davidgerard recently got an arch derivative (cachyos) up and running with all bells and whistles (Bluetooth audio etc) within under 30 minutes I think, and not because I'm experienced, stuff just works ootb now. Even plain arch has a very solid installer nowadays! The memes can stop now!
@dngrs @davidgerard it is shocking. I shared my experiences before. I really tried desktop linux for a *very* long time (2004-2017) and it didn't work and today KVM'ing an external monitor and an USB soundcard works without any config. Just works. Definitely new experience. Same for Thunderbolt networking. I tried a bluetooth speaker, too.
Haven't tried a printer / scanner yet.
My guess: Valve has dragged Linux screaming and protesting into working.
Install Fedizen
Get the full app experience
@davidgerard If you are morbidly curious enough to try one of the billions of scripts allegedly removing ads and declogging win 11, I would be interested in the result. I still have one year of win 10 extended support and I will procrastinate until the last second
