TIL about the Vivek ad debacle. Holy fuck.
@wjmaggos I'd be curious to see or hear a 200 year or so history of notoriously despicable ad campaigns with a ranking system. this one was very recent, but i still think it would rank quite high, overall
#adbusters
@wjmaggos
* 1800: Jefferson vs. Adams (French Revolution panic and "hermaphroditical" pamphlet smears)
* 1828: Jackson vs. Adams ("Coffin Handbills" and Rachel Jackson adultery smears)
* 1864: Lincoln vs. McClellan (Fake "miscegenation" pamphlet stoking racial fear)
* 1884: Cleveland vs. Blaine ("Ma, Ma, where's my Pa?" illegitimate child chants)
* 1964: "Daisy" Ad (LBJ's broadcast implying Goldwater would cause nuclear war)
* 1988: "Willie Horton" Ad (Bush PAC's racially charged prison furlough broadcast)
* 2004: Swift Boat Veterans (Bush PAC's fabricated smear of Kerry's military record)
* 2012: "Debbie Spend It Now" (Hoekstra's racially insensitive Super Bowl ad against Stabenow)
* 2018: Arkansas Midterms (Independent radio ad threatening lynchings if Democrats won)
in this case, it's not so much the ad as the willingness to run it without either knowing or caring why Mom thought her daughter was a liar. and then it's possible lots of voters will only see the ad and not know the bigger story.
Bill Hicks was so right about marketers.
@wjmaggos i totally agree that the doubling down makes it exponentially worse
@wjmaggos Hard to believe, some of the things that happen in #uspol.
And Pres. Trump is jumping in:
