Remember when Google gave a damn about the environment (or at least pretended to)? No pretenses anymore, it seems: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/ng-interactive/2026/oct/22/finland-google-felling-trees-datacentre
@dangillmor @hypebot I think their math is pretty easy. No legal penalty for destroying nature is getting close to the profit prospects. That's how they approach the law. If it's just a penalty payment then they don't care. The legal system must find new way to respond. Their licenses must be revoked to do business. That'll make them think twice.
@dangillmor No, I don't remember that. "Google" is not and has never been a person and we do ourselves and humans in general a disservice by attributing to "it" goals or ethics. There are *people* who own and control the machine name "Google" and they have names and addresses.
People ask the government to create a whole ass fictitious person for them and then pretend like that non-person has moral agency and they can’t be blamed for its actions.
Wait holy shit. Y’all. Shit. It’s happening again.
@jwz @dangillmor But nobody is forced to take responsibility for the damage they do in the name of the company. That's the problem.
@dangillmor If you would not attribute first-person intentionality, and the ability to feel sadness, or shame, to an LLM -- which of course you should not -- you should also deny that language to the financial-shield fiction that is a "corporation" like the so-called "Google". One might as well try to negotiate with SARS-CoV-2. The machine does what it must. It is a plutotropic automaton.
@dangillmor their slogan is "do evil"
@dangillmor I'm having trouble with idea of cutting down 250k trees… and NO ONE noticing until they were apparently done. WTAF?
Was it bulldozers and saplings, or what?
