Ballot tracker will tell me when my ballot is counted. I wish it would tell me what my ballot is counted AS. I want to know it wasn't fucked with.
@woozle Indeed, the secrecy is a double edged sword. Though, I suspect the secrecy isn't as useful today as it used to be. These days, most people are pretty obvious about which side they vote for. Then again, if it was accessible, I garuntee you our current regime would do me harm by looking me up on the list of "traitors".
@hellomiakoda Belated thought: mail-in ballots are automatically not secret -- which kind of leaves a big hole in the dam of "nobody must be able to prove how they voted" security.
I can see some major advantages in dropping that idea altogether, starting with your OP (i.e. being able to verify that your own vote was counted correctly).
@woozle Yes, I did notice the secracy is compramised with the mail in voting. However, at least for me, the fact voting is accessible to me outweighs the secracy issue.
I used to live in a state with voting booths. On the spot, decide RIGHT NOW, PEOPLE ARE WAITING!!! Not a good place for an autistic person to make an informed decision. Oregon... I can read the ballot, process it, here in my nice safe home, in my not-painful lighting, and look up anything I'm unsure on.
@hellomiakoda Ever since they started making sample ballots available online, I've always printed out a copy of mine and then researched any of the people/issues I wasn't familiar with. Much easier process -- but I still tend to be avoidant about doing the research...
I agree about mail-in, for that reason and others.
@hellomiakoda This is one of the down-sides of ballot secrecy. If you can see how your ballot was counted, then you could prove to someone else how you voted -- which means someone could meaningfully threaten another person with harm unless they voted a certain way (or the opposite: a reward for voting the right way, i.e. literal vote-buying).
I don't know how common this would actually be, but it seems like a valid concern.
(...fwiw, apologies if I'm stating the obvious, etc...)
