Question for people smarter than me when it comes to these things: do you think the textarea where you input the alt text here should be focused when opening the modal? I often find myself starting typing right away only to then see nothing I've typed is in the box... :(
Automatic focus changes are usually a thorny issue when you go through by accessibility experts, since they can make blind people get lost.
But clearly that would be an improvement over focusing on the popup title as it does now, which makes no sense at all.
I'm not liking the redesign at all. Most of the changes are for the worse, IMHO.
@jcurioso The dialog does more than one thing and has horrible button placement, so focusing on the title does make sense (the dialog itself would be better, but there are technical reasons we're not doing that).
The modal wasn't changed in the redesign by the way, and we want to improve it in the near future.
@anatudor I think any UI control that has an input as its main feature should give it focus on open.
But since so many websites don't do it, I wonder if there's some hidden UX gotcha against this behaviour, and we're unaware...
@anatudor Unfortunately auto-focus on the alt text field wouldn't be good here, given the way the dialog is currently structured (image focus editor first, alt text second, buttons on top… 🙈)
We do want to redesign this modal, but it was out of scope for Mastodon 5.0. Hopefully shortly after 🤞
